With less than two minutes remaining in Monday’s Northern Region opening-round game between Madison and Yorktown, Patriot junior Simon Kilday hit a three-pointer from the wing to give Yorktown its first lead since early in the second quarter.
But the excitement that overtook the home crowd was snatched away nearly as quickly as it came.
Madison junior Gavin Hilburn was the culprit, putting the Warhawks back on top by hitting a three-pointer of his own. A Yorktown miss and a few free throws by junior Omi Ogolo later, Madison sealed its 52-49 victory over Yorktown in Arlington.
“We knew we were gonna spread them,” Madison Coach Chris Kuhblank said. “They had to worry about the guys inside. Someone was going to get the shot and Gavin drilled it. He went in for defense, but he is a great shooter.”
Madison senior Colin Flaherty led the Warhawks with a team-high 17 points, hitting a number of mid-range jump shots throughout the game. And Warhawk seniors Scott Leduc (7 points) and Todd Crissey (five) controlled the paint, grabbing of number of offensive rebounds.
Yorktown’s late run was fueled by senior David Grebb, who scored nine of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Kilday ended the game with 11 points and senior Wes Huntoon added six.
Madison will travel to face Annandale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. When asked about his thoughts on the quarterfinal game before he knew that the Atoms had defeated the Chargers, Kuhblank added: “I like our chances. I have seen them both. No matter who we play, I like our chances.”
