There was an areal assault down Route 1 Friday night, and No. 9 Yorktown struggled to keep pace with its hosts and No. 6 West Potomac, led by senior quarterback Cole Walter, pulled away for a 51-27 victory.

Walter, though not big in stature at just 5-feet-9-inches, has played like a giant all season. Friday night was no exceptions as he completed a whopping 30-of-42 passes for 339 yards and four touchdowns despite not taking a snap in the fourth quarter.

For the season Walter, who spread the ball around all night making it difficult for the Patriots to slow down any single reciver, has totaled 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Junior Will Rosenkranz caught 11 balls for 91 yards including 10-yard touchdown.

“I’m not the guy who will beat you deep, I will get you short and get yards after the catch,” Rosenkranz said. “I love this offense.”

The guy who will bet you deep is senior wideout Kristian Rodriguez.

Rodriguez entered the night with four touchdowns through two games and added two more to that total with a 19-yard leaping catch in the back of the end zone and a screen pass the he took all the way from 65-yards out. Rodriguez finished with 111 yards on six receptions.

Junior Sean Lee added seven catches for 40-yards and senior Charles Johnson totaled four catches for 70 yards and a score.

“We take pride in developing wide receivers here” West Potomac Coach Eric Henderson said. “We feel like we have the type of kid walking around the hallway here that can be a good wide receiver. Plus, the kids respond to the offense.”

Despite being down most of the game, Yorktown senior Kyle Toulouse kept the Patriots within reach. His No. 9 jersey seemed to be more than one place at a time. He lined up at tailback, played some quarterback, caught a few passes and was all over the field defensively. Toulouse scored on touchdown runs from 10 and 68 yards, respectively, and caught a 43-yard touchdown as time expired in the first half to pull the Patriots within 10. He even added an interception and a fumble recovery.

“Man-oh-man do they have some athletes over there with No. 24 and 9,” Henderson said in reference to senior Jared Smith and Toulouse. “They just kept coming and at the beginning I thought man, we might be in trouble. I just wasn’t sure if we could contain all that playing speed.”

Smith had an interception and a 24-yard touchdown run.

West Potomac scored three times on the ground as well. Juniors Edward Johnson and Colin Mathewson scored from 43 and 2 yards, respectively and senior Daniel Baker plunged in from the 1-yard line.

The Wolverines improve to 3-0 entering district play Friday against at Lee, while Yorktown falls to 2-1 and will host Stuart next week.
