Hayfield (2-1) at Yorktown (1-2)
DigitalSports Co-Game of the Week
The Hawks have scored exactly 35 points in every game this season. The 105 points is their highest three-game output since Weeks 6-8 in 2000.
That was also the last year Hayfield made the postseason.
Yorktown came out swinging in Week 1, beating Wilson (D.C.) handily. But against VHSL teams — whereupon it draws PowerPoints — it is 0-2, including a one-point loss at Centreville last week. The Wildcats snapped a region-long 10-game losing streak with their 21-20 win over the Patriots, even though Yorktown gained more yardage.
The Hawks possess the only non-quarterback in the Northern Region that has multiple touchdowns in every game this season, senior tailback Rayshawn Rigans. To key too much on Rigans would be asking for trouble, though.
Sophomore Steve Lynch and senior Anton McCallum all have home-run capability.
The Patriots are still awaiting the return of senior quarterback Sam Nottingham, who Coach Bruce Hanson expects to run their new spread offense with great efficiency.
While dual-threat sophomore Jordan Smith has been far from a liability under center — 31-for-68 passing, 314 yards and two touchdowns versus three picks this year — Nottingham tops the depth chart.
This game says more for Hayfield than it will for Yorktown. The two Hawks wins are against teams that are 0-6, while their lone loss is against the current No. 1 seed in Division 5, Lee (3-0).
This is battle for heir-apparency to Edison’s throne in the National District.
In its second-ever National District game, a Hayfield victory puts it in the driver’s seat.
The X-factor here is Patriot senior Hoby Hafiz. He’s lethal in the open field and had six carries for 83 yards and a 30-yard rushing touchdown last week.
