Girls’ Basketball: Edison 79, Yorktown 52

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

**Check the bottom of the article for highlights and interviews from Friday’s game, including the half time performance by Yorktown’s dance team**

The original lead to this story was going to be the one-point advantage Yorktown held after the first quarter against visiting Edison.

It is likely the first time in which the Eagles have trailed a National District opponent after any quarter since their all-time leading scorer Doreena Campbell (2007) was an eighth-grader. Edison was unbeaten against district competition in Campbell’s four-year tenure, and lost to only five Northern Region opponents overall.

But then, with just under two minutes remaining in the second quarter, Patriot point guard LaNia Charity (six points) suffered an ankle injury while going for a defensive rebound. When it became clear she would not return to the game, the tone of the Yorktown players — and fans — changed.

Edison, an eventual 79-52 winner, opened a seven-point half time lead and took visible momentum into the locker room.

“She’s our point guard, along with [Tiarra] Rogers,” said Patriot Coach Kim Cordell. “Only having one point guard to really go to makes it difficult with the sub rotation.

“LaNia has such a big heart and is a scrappy player and does a lot of stuff for us. I think when she got injured our girls were really concerned about it and it disheartened them a little bit.”

However, that lead for the story was scrapped when two Eagle senior forwards — Adria Crawford and Chasity Clayton — dominated the second half. In the opening four minutes of the third quarter, the Georgetown-bound Crawford scored eight of her 13 points to extend Edison’s lead to 18 — at the time, the game’s largest margin.

“My teammates encouraged me and brought me up,” Crawford said.

Florida State committee Clayton, though — ever the headliner — hit a three-pointer to close the third before scoring 14 of her career-high 32 points in the fourth quarter to secure the victory for Edison. Yorktown, as a team, scored 14 points in the final period.

“Coach [Dianne Lewis] told me to ‘Crash the boards, crash the boards, crash the boards,’ ” Clayton said. “So I did it.”

The result was a seemingly one-sided affair that was not necessarily reflective of the majority of the contest. Still, the 27-point disparity was nine points closer than any district win for the Eagles last season. In 2006-07, Edison won its 15 National District games — including those in the district tournament —  by an average of 60.7 points per game. Only four of those wins were by a margin less than 40 points, two of which came against Yorktown.

“It was nerve-racking,” Crawford said. “They gave us a good game.”

Off to their best start in school history, the heiresses apparent to the National District throne are the Patriots. But the Eagles, at least for now, are still in a class all their own.

Now there’s a great lead.
