Girls’ Playoff Basketball: Northern Region Semifinals

**Look below the story to find two video players with highlights from Thursay’s semifinal action … one each from the Lee-Madison and Yorktown-W.T. Woodson games.

When the final buzzer sounded on No. 4 Lee’s 53-49 victory over No. 3 Madison Thursday night, there was as much relief as there was satisfaction displayed on behalf of the Lancers.

Lee, widely regarded as one of the four-best teams in the Northern Region throughout the regular-season, had knocked off the lone remaining No. 1 seed in the semifinal round at George Mason University’s Patriot Center.

The nightcap brought more explicit joy from eighth-ranked W.T. Woodson, which banged loudly on its locker room doors and squealed with excitement after a 54-41 victory over Yorktown in the second half of the semifinal double-header.

The Cavaliers were not expected to advance out of the top half of the bracket that included powerhouses — and No. 1 seeds — T.C. Williams and Oakton.

But W.T. Woodson did, securing a beth in the upcoming state tournament as well.

“This is awesome,” said Cavaliers’ Coach Pat Neri, whose team improved to 20-6 on the year. “It’s like a dream journey right now for our kids.”

Lee Coach Rudy Coffield was equally excited for his team, which despite being 24-3 was prematurely knocked out of the Patriot District tournament and fell to a No. 3 seed entering regional play.

“That’s playoff basketball, baby,” Coffield said of the Lancers, whose team trailed 45-40 with 4 minutes, 6 seconds remaining before making its run. “We knew that if we could just keep it close and stay in it we could find out if they could finish or not. We knew [Madison was] going to be tough. They’re 26-1. Come on. But we just wanted to stay close and see if they could finish.

“I’ve been telling the girls all year long that defense wins championships. We’ve got six or seven kids that can put the ball in the hole, but it don’t mean jack if we can’t stop anybody.”

But the Lancers did contain Madison senior standout Marygrace Jay, limiting her to just seven of her 17 points in the second half when they made their comeback. Lee, meanwhile, was led by junior Kristine Mial’s game-high 25 points, while senior J’Quita Babineaux added 12.

Trailing 47-46 with 1:56 to play, Lee took its first lead since the midway-point of the third quarter on two successful free throws by Mial. The Lancers hit seven foul shots in the game’s final two minutes to secure their victory.

“Kristine is a phenomenal player,” Coffield said. “She gives us what we need, and all the garbage down the stretch. She’s our go-to player.”

Said Madison Coach Denise Weinig: “I guess I’m just severely disappointed. But Lee, they were a great team tonight. I thought they were going to miss some shots, but Babineaux and Mial just make some brilliant moves to the basket and we just — I felt like we didn’t match up well against them. … We couldn’t get into our half-court offense, which is when we’re at our best.

“So many times the ball got tipped out of our hands on rebounds or just the pressure on us. I don’t know if we had seen that type of pressure all year.”

The Cavaliers had an easier go of it in the night’s second game, jumping to a 27-21 lead with 3:01 remaining in the first half on a three-point shot by Ashley Thompson (15 points), one of only two seniors on the Cavaliers’ roster. W.T. Woodson, led by senior center Sarah Schoof’s game-high 19 points, did not relinquish its lead on Yorktown the entire second half.

“We’re all just so excited,” Thompson said. “We’re freaking out right now we’re so happy. We always knew it was possible

“I think we played really hard. We got it into our post player, Sarah Schoof, and she was making some major shots. Melissa Gallo was hitting her shots like always, Leah Bonuccelli was driving the basket really strong and, of course, Becca Bajkowski was dribbling like I could never even think about dribbling.

“It feels amazing.”

Boys’ Playoff Basketball: No. 7 Madison 52, Yorktown 49

By Jimmy Thomas
Content Editor, DigialSports.com

Check below the story for video highlights of Monday’s game

With less than two minutes remaining in Monday’s Northern Region opening-round game between Madison and Yorktown, Patriot junior Simon Kilday hit a three-pointer from the wing to give Yorktown its first lead since early in the second quarter.

But the excitement that overtook the home crowd was snatched away nearly as quickly as it came.

Madison junior Gavin Hilburn was the culprit, putting the Warhawks back on top by hitting a three-pointer of his own. A Yorktown miss and a few free throws by junior Omi Ogolo later, Madison sealed its 52-49 victory over Yorktown in Arlington.

“We knew we were gonna spread them,” Madison Coach Chris Kuhblank said. “They had to worry about the guys inside. Someone was going to get the shot and Gavin drilled it. He went in for defense, but he is a great shooter.”

Madison senior Colin Flaherty led the Warhawks with a team-high 17 points, hitting a number of mid-range jump shots throughout the game. And Warhawk seniors Scott Leduc (7 points) and Todd Crissey (five) controlled the paint, grabbing of number of offensive rebounds.

Yorktown’s late run was fueled by senior David Grebb, who scored nine of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Kilday ended the game with 11 points and senior Wes Huntoon added six.

Madison will travel to face Annandale at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the quarterfinal round. When asked about his thoughts on the quarterfinal game before he knew that the Atoms had defeated the Chargers, Kuhblank added: “I like our chances. I have seen them both. No matter who we play, I like our chances.”

Boys’ Playoff Basketball: National District Semifinals

By Angela Watts
Senior Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story to find two separate video players — one with dozens of highlights from each of the National District semifinals played on Wednesday.)

Mount Vernon did it with a stingy defense that played lights-out in the third quarter. Yorktown used a sharp-shooting offensive attack that couldn’t miss in the fourth.

But the results were the same: Victories in their respective National District semifinal games Wednesday night at host Mount Vernon to set up Friday’s championship pairing.

Mount Vernon, which advanced with a a 64-59 victory over Stuart, and Yorktown, a 69-50 winner over Edison, split their two regular-season meetings this year. The Majors had the upper hand in the first meeting, a 10-point win on Jan. 22, but the Patriots avenged that earlier loss with a five-point victory on Valentines’ Day.

They will meet again at 9 p.m. Friday to decide who will earn the coveted district tournament banner for 2008. Mount Vernon last won the title in 2006; Yorktown in 2007.

“We’ll let’s see,” Patriots’ Coach Rich Avila said with a sly grin. “They’ve got home-court advantage. They’ve got the league’s offensive and defensive player of the year. So we’ll just see what happens.”

What happened Wednesday night is that both teams controlled their respective games from start-to-finish. Mount Vernon’s lead over Stuart was slimmer throughout, but the Majors still managed to hold an advantage at the end of each quarter.

And after a longer-than-usual half time speech from Coach Alfonso Smith, they clamped down in the third quarter and limited the often high-powered Raiders to just nine points to take a more comfortable, 46-38 lead into the final period.

“In the first half it wasn’t that we weren’t playing defense, but we weren’t playing it as good as we should,” junior swingman Robert Coleman said. “In the second half, we just played Major ‘D’ and that led to turnovers and fast breaks.”

And while the league’s aforementioned National District Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year — senior point guard Marquel DeLancey — had some highlight-reel moments, he most certainly shared the stage Wednesday night with underclassmen Coleman and Skylar Jones.

Jones paced the Majors with 19 points a piece and DeLancey added 16 more, leaving the trio to account for all but 10 of Mount Vernon’s total points scored.

Stuart got a three-pointer from sophomore guard Antonio Harris (team-high 17 points) with :19.4 seconds to play to cut what had been a 10-point Majors’ lead with 2:24 to play to 61-56, but it proved too late for a comeback.

“They’ve got some guys who can put the ball in the basket, and we all know that,” said Smith, whose Majors have won 23 of the last 24 meetings with the Raiders. “But everything for us started with defense. It really always does.”

Yorktown also played solid defense, but it was the Patriots’ unmatched perimeter offense that proved the difference in their nearly 20-point win over the Eagles. Yorktown hit six three-pointers on the night, five of which came off the hands of junior forward Simon Kilday.

In the fourth quarter Patriot sophomore Mike Veith and Kilday drained back-to-back three’s to open a 49-35 lead with 6:15 to play and send their student cheering section into a frenzy.

But even better: Kilday’s grandfather, Lowell, gave him a warm hug after the game and told him that his performance was the best birthday present ever. The elder Kilday was at the game celebrating his 77th year.

“If we’re playing up to the best we can play, there’s nobody we can’t beat,” said Simon Kilday, who scored a game-high 25 points. “If we come out and play to the maximum of our potential we’re very confident in our abilities.”

Edison senior forward Kendall Wallace nearly matched Kilday’s total, scoring a team-high 22 points. This came much to the dismay of the spirited Patriot crowd that serenaded Wallace every time he touched the ball.

“You can’t stop Kendall,” Kilday said. “He’s too tough inside. He’s strong and he’s going to get his buckets. But we figured as long as we contained everybody else we’d be okay.”

And despite Avila’s fears — and 17 more points from Eagles’ senior guard Jamire Davis — they were.

“I kept telling the guys not to get caught up because no lead is insurmountable for those guys,” Avila said. “Edison is an explosive team. They’ve just got so much firepower. You could have a 15-point lead, but then all of the sudden they could come back and, before you know it, the lead is gone.

“So I thought we did a good job of hanging in and countering when they did make their runs at us. We hit several big three’s to keep our lead going.”

Now the Patriots’ focus must switch to controlling another explosive team — the tournament hosts and their star senior.

“We held DeLancey to nine the last time we played, but he’s such a great player that he’s going to feel like he’s got something to prove,” Avila said. “So our guys are expecting that kind of performance from him. And we’ve got to see if we can match it.”

Robinson’s Boys Win Sixth-Straight Virginia AAA Swim & Dive Championship

By Sam Dowell
Fairfax High Senior

(Look below the story for dozens of video highlights and interviews from Saturday’s championship meet.)

On an evening full of record-setting performances, it was Robinson Coach Rich Gordon who took the last swim of the night after celebrating the most unprecedented record of all: The Rams’ boys team, led by seniors Derek Bui and Tim Wingert, won their sixth consecutive Virginia AAA state title.

To put that in perspective, it means that Gordon’s teams have won the championship every year since his seniors were in the sixth grade.

“Six straight championships is amazing to say,” Gordon said incredulously after reality was finally setting in.

This championship was just as important to the swimmers as it was to their coach.

“I was the two-time defending state champion in the 100-breaststroke and I just wanted to contribute to this team as a senior and as one of the captains,” said Bui, who won that event for the third consecutive time, tying the state record that Thomas Jefferson’s Jonathan Christensen set in the preliminary round.

In all, there were a total of 18 state records tied or broken out of the 24 events, 16 of which were set by Northern Region athletes or teams.

Wingert and Lake Braddock’s Ashley Danner were the only two swimmers to be a part of three state records this year.

“Getting three state records is amazing,” Danner said. “I was really proud of both my individual events. I did what I wanted to do – get the records.”

Fairfax’s girls’ team also shined. Highlighted by two state record-breaking relays in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle, the Rebels high quantity of stellar swimmers led to a first-place team finish.

“We knew we could get it,” said Fairfax senior Emily Ferguson, who competed in four races for the Rebels, including serving as the anchor on that 200-yard medley relay team. “We really wanted it. We knew we had tough competition, but we just had to go out there, swim fast and set the tone for all the other meets.”
