Honorable Mentions (in no order):
Bats Off
— Yorktown CF Bill Edgar gets a bizarre ground out to the pitcher in the Patriots’ 8-4 win over the Generals.
Koko with the K.O., K.O. — Ram junior Alex “Koko” Makumbi scored back-to-back goals in the 66th and 69th minutes to cap a hat trick in Robinson’s 3-1 road victory over rival Westfield.
Zurn and Go — In the Montgomery County Publics vs. Privates All-Star Game, St. Andrews senior Alexander Zurn sinks a filthy and-one layup in traffic. But the Publics won the VOLi Sports All-Star Challenge, 108-97.

No. 10 — Seppi Slide
Prince George’s County, Maryland  — In an 8-5 win for Eleanor Roosevelt over High Point, Raider 3B Luke Seppi goes all-out to catch this high pop-up in foul territory, sliding to retire the batter.

No. 9 –Bryner Bases-Clearing Two-Bagger
S.M.A.C., Maryland — Calvert sophomore Ed Bryner unloads the bases with this two-out, three-run double to clinch a mercy-rule, 16-4 victory for the Cavaliers over the Hurricanes in a battle of previously-unbeaten teams in Frederick City.

No. 8 — K.C. Sunshine
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Park View junior K.C. Onyeador shows a nose for goal is genetic with back-to-back hat tricks for the Patriots. K.C. Onyeador’s cousin, Uche Onyeador, holds the Virginia high school record with 127 career goals, including a single-season record 42 as a junior, and plays at Georgetown. K.C. is on pace to obliterate the Park View school record for career goals.

No. 7 –Meet in the Middel

Montgomery County, Maryland — Churchill senior Parker Middel gets back-to-back bone-shattering hits on would-be Wootton defenders. But the Patriots retaliated further down the countdown.

No. 6 –Hurricane James
S.M.A.C., Maryland — This early-season match-up between Northern and Huntingtown, the winner was poised to put itself in the driver’s seat in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference. The Hurricanes called shotgun and put the Pats in the trunk. Huntingtown senior Peter Athens and Mike James scored five and six goals, respectively, in its 20-8 win to move to 3-0.

No. 5 –Great Wahl
Northern Region, Virginia — West Springfield and Lake Braddock entered this Patriot District season-opener ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the Northern Region Baseball Coaches’ Association poll. Spartan junior Bobby Wahl made sure his squad would retain that top spot for another week with a complete game one-hitter, striking out 13 Bruins, while only walking one.

No. 4 –– Ladies’ Night
Powell Precision
Loudoun County, Virginia
— Broad Run striker Valerie Powell used the outside of her left foot to float this perfectly-placed shot over the Stone Bridge goalkeeper for the game-winning tally in the Spartans 2-1 road win. Broad Run is the defending Virginia AA state champion, returned 16 players from that unit and won its 26th-consecutive game thanks to Powell’s heroics.

Costello-Mays Caps Win
Prince William County, Virginia — Woodbridge and Battlefield met in a rematch of last year’s Northwest Region final, a 3-2 penalty-kick win for the Vikings. This time around, Woodbridge left little doubt, with a 4-0 win, highlighted by two goals from Kristen Lybert and capped by this 61st-minute free kick by Kellsey Costello-Mays.

No. 3 –Doran Doran
Montgomery County, Maryland — Wootton sophomore attackman Christopher Doran gets revenge for Play No. 7 in the Top 10 with this behind-the-head goal as the Patriots locked up a 10-3 win over the Bulldogs.

No. 2 –Double Lutz
Prince William County, Virginia — After Battlefield blew a three-goal lead at the start of the fourth period by allowing five Forest Park goals, Bobcat senior Chris Lutz scores the game-winning, double-overtime goal to beat the Bruins, 7-6. The home win avenges a 16-5 home loss for Battlefield to Forest Park last season, the Bobcats’ worst of the year.

No. 1 — Clay-Born to Run
Montgomery County, MarylandDamascus sophomore Cassie Clayborne hit an inside-the-park grand slam as part of her team’s 10-2 win over Blair. The Hornets’ current No. 5-hitter was in the lead-off spot last season and demonstrated both her speed and power on this Play of the Week.

Yorktown Boys’ Tennis Extends Winning Streak in National District

Submitted by Yorktown Tennis

Yorktown’s boys’ varsity tennis team extended its National District winning streak to 5-0 last week with wins over Edison and Mount Vernon.

The Patriots defeated Edison, 6-3, on March 23 with wins in four singles matches and two doubles matches. Yorktown then swept Mount Vernon, 8-0, in an away match on March 27.

Contributing to the pair of victories were three Patriots who remain undefeated in singles matches this season: No. 1 Matt Karvelas, No. 4 Jonathan Ammirati and No. 5 Aidan Papavizas.

Yorktown Coach Dave Barton noted that the win over Edison was significant.

“This was an important win since Yorktown had lost twice to Edison last year,” he said.

In the Edison match, Dan Yeatman also won in the No. 6 singles slot.

Against Mount Vernon, other singles winners were No. 2 Matt McDonnell, No. 3 Sky Leyden and No. 6 Ben Martindale.

Yorktown Launches ****** Cancer Awareness Campaign With Big Victory

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links to access a full photo gallery and dozens of video highlights from Friday’s game!

Yorktown’s softball team kicked off its ****** cancer awareness and fund-raising campaign in grand fashion Friday night, downing National District rival Wakefield, 15-0, in its home-opener.

The Patriots — who donned pink T-shirts that read “Yorktown Cares” over their navy blue uniforms — showed their strength and their consistency throughout the lineup, as 13 different players combined for a whopping 21 hits in the six-inning victory.

But from the first pitch, which was thrown out ceremonially by Arlington County Board Chairman — and ****** cancer survivor — Barbara Favola, this game was about much more than softball statistics.

“On a personal level, my mother has suffered  and she’s a survivor of ****** cancer … three times,” first-year Coach Julie Fetter said of her mother, Jeanne Fetter. “She’s very fortunate. And the girls need to be aware of it. Hopefully we’ll find a cure. And it was nice that Barbara could come out … it was nice of all of Arlington that everyone came out to support us.”

Fetter isn’t the only one in the Patriots’ softball family with a history of the disease. Assistant coaches Deb Litman and Laura Rubinchuk both have personal histories as well — Litman’s grandmother died from ****** cancer and Rubinchuk’s mother and grandmother are both survivors.

Those are just some of the reasons why Yorktown will be donating portions of its ticket, T-shirt, concession and raffle sales to ****** cancer research from now until it hosts its biggest rival — Bishop O’Connell — on May 2.

“Tonight was the start, and we’re going to end against our biggest rival, Bishop O’Connell,” Fetter said. “So you’ll see a lot more people in the stands that night.”

But there were plenty in attendance on Friday, and all were witness to the Patriots’ power.

Leadoff hitter Kristen Soroka, the team’s starting shortstop, went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, with two singles, two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored. But Soroka wasn’t the only one.

Ten different Patriots scored in the game, six registered multiple hits — including Soroka, pitcher Annie Blaine, first baseman Olivia Merrion, second basemen Emily Panyard, right fielder Gretchen Schneider, catcher Stephanie Severn — and six totaled more than one RBI.

“We’ve been hitting that consistently,” said Fetter, whose team improved to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the National District. “They’ve really come together as a team. They love each other, so that makes a difference. We have a lot of talent all-around, so it makes them easy to coach.

“But, at other times,” Fetter added, laughing, “it can also be the most difficult to coach.”

That’s because there is so much talent on the Patriots’ roster that Fetter and her assistants are forced to rotate some extremely skillful players.

Blaine was remarkable Friday night, allowing one hit while striking out nine batters and walking none in four innings of work. She struck out the side in both the first and third innings.

But she isn’t Yorktown’s only standout pitcher: Senior Hannah Bauman shines for the Patriots as well. The same can be said at catcher, where Friday’s starter — Severn — also splits the work-load with Panyard.

“We’re very fortunate that we have that problem,” Fetter said, laughing. “We have, I feel, two of the best pitchers and two of the best catcher in the league. And they’re all hard-headed and they all want to win. So our battery is fun. They’re a fun group to coach, and they’re equally talented.

“I’m really happy we have them on our team.”

Baseball: Yorktown 9, Washington-Lee 4

By Phil Murphy
Senior Multimedia/Content Editor
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area

If Tom Brady plays a pivotal role in a Patriots’ victory, it is not breaking news in any area of the country.

But Brady doing so in March — and hitting in the eight spot in a game they win, 9-4 — just might turn some heads.

Patriot senior centerfielder Tom Brady was one of six different players to drive in runs for Yorktown in its 9-4 road win over Washington-Lee on a chilly Tuesday afternoon, conditions reminiscent of a New England spring.

“It’s a little old now,” said Brady (2-4, 2 RBI) of his teammates’ jokes from his coincidental etymology. “When I first got on the team, it was pretty bad. It was almost every day.”

The quarterback of these Patriots, though — both literally on the football team in the fall and figuratively, with his leadership, on the diamond — is senior pitcher and second baseman Kyle Toulouse.

On Tuesday, he pitched a complete game, allowing just two earned runs and six hits, while striking out four Generals.

Toulouse threw 100 pitches, 63 for strikes, and delivered first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 31 batters he faced.

But entering the seventh inning, he had already thrown 91 pitches and had a five-run lead. While Toulouse was three outs from a complete game, Yorktown coach Mike Allen watched his ace’s final inning with a degree of precaution.

“If anyone gets to second base [I’d pull him],” said Allen, 156-103 in just over 12 seasons as the Patriots’ skipper. “Usually if it’s a closer game, it’s smaller. I judge how he feels. A week ago when we played, I pulled him a little earlier at 70 pitches. Tonight, he was strong, he threw mostly fastballs.

“He was going to go maybe about 105, and that’s as far as he would have gone.”

Added Toulouse, who hit a first-pitch solo home run in the fourth inning to provide his own insurance: “It all depends on how I feel. I feel like if my arm is a little tired, he lets me go. Generally, though, I’m not on a pitch count. I just go until they hit me.”

Although this was the first district game of the season — and fourth overall for both teams — its importance can not be neglected.

Yorktown (3-1), the defending National District champions, won 17-straight games last season before falling in the first round of the Northern Region Tournament to Robinson.

And Washington-Lee (2-2), who was only 11-12 last year, has possibly the most-balanced line-up in the district and has the firepower trade offensive blows with any team.

With the Generals pinned as the heir apparent to the Patriots’ throne, Yorktown’s veteran coach found much gratification in his team’s decisive road win, even with the entire district schedule left to be played.

“It’s good for two reasons,” said Allen, who graduated his entire outfield from last year’s 18-4 team. “One, it’s the first win in the district and we were undefeated last year, so we have a nice little streak going and all. And, second, it’s our archrival. It’s always big.

“We could be 0-20 or 20-0, it’s going to be a big game with W-L.”
