one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Featured Athlete of the Week, found in a video

Herndon senior pitcher Katie Briggs earned Velocity’s Featured Athlete of the Week honors after leading the Hornets to a 1-0 victory over visiting Robinson in eight innings on Thursday.

Not only did Briggs throw an excellent game — striking out 13 Rams’ batters in the game, including striking out the side in the second inning and fanning two batters in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings — she was provided the game-winning hit.

Locked in a scoreless tie in the bottom half of the eighth inning, Briggs took an outside pitch to deep right field to score senior second baseman
Chelsea Roseberry for a 1-0, walk-off
victory. Roseberry had reached on a single in the game’s first
additional inning and moved to second when senior center fielder Marra Hvozdovic drew a walk.

With the victory Herndon improved to 10-3 overall on the season with six regular-season games remaining.

VHSL Announces New Redistricting Plan for Northern Region

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

Two current members of the Northern Region — and two who would like to be — plead their cases before the Virginia High School League’s Redistricting and Reclassification committee Monday in Charlottesville.

But only the two current Northern Region schools — Hayfield and Stone Bridge — won the initial battle.

Hayfield, which is currently a member of the Patriot District, appealed its
continued placement there and requested to be moved to the National
District. And Stone Bridge, which currently a member of the Liberty District, appealed its
proposed move to the Cedar Run District in the Northwest Region and
requested to remain a member of the Liberty District.

Both requests were granted.

That was not the case for Heritage (AA Dulles District) and Loudoun Valley (AAA Cedar Run) of
Loudoun County, which appealed their proposed placement into the Cedar Run
District and, instead, requested to join the Northern Region. Heritage
asked to join as a member of the Liberty District; Loudoun Valley as a
member of the Concorde District.

Both of those requests were denied.

The only other change to the current alignment is Fairfax, which had previously been
moved out of the Concorde District, where it currently plays, and into the Liberty District.

A school still has one last opportunity to appeal the decisions that were made on Monday. It may appeal the R&R committee’s decision to the VHSL’s Executive Committee. No hearing will be held, but the Executive Committee will review the written record of the original appeal and issue its decision. The Executive Committe will meet May 7, and the final plan will go into effect July 1, 2009.

As it stands today, the most recent proposal for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years is as follows:

Concorde District
Centreville (2283)
Chantilly (2835)
Herndon (2190)
Oakton (2350)
Robinson (2751)
Westfield (3171)

Liberty District
Fairfax (2125)
Thomas Jefferson (1805)
Langley (2083)
Madison (1910)
Marshall (1326)
McLean (1767)
South Lakes (1442)
Stone Bridge (1704)
W.T. Woodson (2115)

National District
Edison (1769)
Falls Church (1318)
Hayfield (1583)
Mount Vernon (1758)
JEB Stuart (1545)
Wakefield (1633)
Washington-Lee (1743)
Yorktown (1883)

Patriot District
Annandale (2383)
Lake Braddock (2507)
Lee (1875)
South County (2044)
T.C. Williams (2807)
West Potomac (1982)
West Springfield (2217)

Velocity Player of the Week — April 14

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** DigitalSports videographer Phil Murphy sits down for a one-on-one conversation with the Velocity Player of the Week, found in a video player just below the story.

Langley senior center fielder Lindsay Brown blasted a two-run,
home run over the left-center field fence in the top of the ninth inning last Thursday to
break open the tie and lead the Saxons to a 9-6 victory at Madison.

Langley (9-1, 4-0 Liberty) entered Monday’s district game at Stone Bridge having won eight consecutive ball games, including outscoring Thomas Jefferson, South Lakes and W.T. Woodson by a combined total of 79-3 in the three games prior to facing the Warhawks.

Brown, whose younger sister Brooke, a sophomore, picked up the win from the pitching circle on Thursday, has been a big part of the reason for success. Lindsay totaled seven hits during the teams’ 4-1 run through its spring tournament in Myrtle Beach, and has been on fire at the plate ever since.

Boys’ Basketball: 35th Annual Capital Classic

By Angela Watts
Managing Content Editor, DigitalSports.com

** Check below each box score to find two separate video players with highlights from both Capital Classic games. Re-live the regional game in 9 minutes, and the national game in 8 minutes.**

Annandale senior Erik Etherly and T.C. Williams senior Anthony Winbush sat side-by-side chatting on the bench during Saturday’s 35th Annual Capital Classic at the University of Maryland Comcast Center.

And when Suburban teammate Austin Cooley from Bethesda Chevy-Chase went baseline midway through the fourth quarter for a nasty, alley-opp dunk that he was forced to stretch back with one hand to haul in —  and then throw down — the Northern Region pair leapt to their feet in celebration.

“Slam of the month!,” Etherly shouted.

And while it was certainly the best dunk of both of Saturday’s local and national Capital Classic games, the four Northern Region representatives — Etherly, Winbush, Mount Vernon senior Marquel De Lancey and Westfield senior Maurice Hubbard — had their share of highlights, too.

Etherly, in particular, sparkled in the second half of the afternoon’s first game, helping lead the Suburban All-Stars to a near-miraculous comeback over the District All-Stars in a 131-128 loss. The Suburban All-Stars trailed by as many as 19 points, but fought their way back and pulled within 111-110 with 4 minutes, 33 seconds to play on a one of Etherly’s four dunks.

The Suburban team never tied the game, but had a chance to send it to overtime with a three-point shot by Chase Smith of Eleanor Roosevelt, but it fell short at the buzzer to seal the game’s final margin.

Etherly finished tied for the team-high with 22 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line, adding eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals. Hubbard contributed six points, six rebounds and two steals for the Suburban squad, while Winbush finished with four points, three rebounds and one block.

“It was exciting,” Hubbard said. “It’s something I’ll definitely remember, and it’s a good way to finish my high school career. And it shows us just how much faster and stronger the game will be at the next level.”

De Lancey (five rebounds, two assists) was the Northern Region’s lone representative in the second, national game, which pitted the Capital All-Stars against the U.S. All-Stars in what turned out to be a big, 123-85 victory for the U.S. squad.

This year’s U.S. roster was highlighted by Maryland-bound Sean Mosley (16 points, six assists) from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore and Duke-bound Olek Czyz (game-high 23 points) from Reno High in Nevada. Former U.S. players have included the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Patrick Ewing, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Ralph Sampson and Dominique Wilkins.

“I appreciate getting picked to play in the national game … it’s truly an honor,” said De Lancey, who will play next season at Old Dominion University. “I just wish I would have played better. But it shows me what I have to do, what I have to work on before next year. I have to get used to the speed of the game, and hit the weight room.”

In addition to their memories, all four area players left the game with hearty smiles and backpacks filled with free gear from Converse and the event’s title sponsor, Under Armour.

“This was a lot of fun,” Etherly said with a grin. “I’d say it probably ranks second only to the DigitalSports Showcase as far as this season’s highlights go.”
