DigitalSports Feature: NoVa sends “Team America” to Germany

** Check below the story for interviews with members of Team USA and former players of Mark “Pudge” Gjormand.

After hearing Mark “Pudge” Gjormand speak about his experiences and success as James Madison High Schools head baseball coach at the National Coaches Conference, USA Baseball officials asked him to lead a team of high school eligible players from Northern Virginia to Germany in an effort to promote the game overseas.

Gjormand’s selection should come as no surprise.

In his 13 seasons at the helm at James Madison, Gjormand has racked up one Virginia AAA state title, back-to-back Northern Region championships, six Liberty District titles and was ranked in the top five in the nation in 2002 by ESPN and USA Today. He has been named the district, region and state Coach of the Year. He was also named BCA East Coast Coach of the year and was a finalist for BCA National Coach of the Year. Both awards sponsored by Baseball America.

Former Warhawk and University of Virginia standout Justin Counts and Centreville High School head coach Morgan Spencer have been chosen as assistant coaches. After some research and nominations from local coaches a 15-man roster(see below) was assembled.

“When these guys were selected, it wasn’t all about talent,” Gjormand said. “We are not only representing Northern Virginia, we are representing the United States. We wanted guys with great talent and great character. I am really excited about the opportunity and I am looking forward to it being an incredible experience for myself and the players. It is really an honor to be able to do this.”

America’s Team will arrive in Munich on July 30 and will travel to Deggendorf and Frankfurt over the next eight days playing six games against the best college and pro-level talent that Germany has to offer.

Although the games will be at the forefront of their minds, the players will also mix in some European history and culture during their trip as well.

The team will enjoy a sightseeing tour through Munich on bicycles, visit the castle of Neuschwanstein built by mad King Ludwig II and will travel to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial — a vivid reminder of the Nazi atrocities during World War II.

“It’s going to fun visiting a different part of the world that I haven’t seen before,” Spencer said. “We have our own tour guide and translator. Baseball is obviously the reason we are there but we are going to take full advantage of what Germany has to offer.”

Virginia Barnstormers Turn Potential Game Into Impromptu Practice

By Jimmy Thomas

** Look below to watch video interviews with a handful of Barnstormers players.

The Virginia Barnstormers — an area travel baseball team — gathered at Bishop O’Connell High School Thursday evening for what they expected to be a game against a team from the District of Columbia.

The Barnstormers warmed up with batting practice, but then found themselves waiting for their opponent to arrive. And then waiting some more. After more than 30 minutes, the Barnstormers gave up and instead staged a impromptu intrasquad scrimmage.

DigitalSports took some time during play to talk with recent Lake Braddock graduate Steven Lindemuth (Christopher Newport College), rising Bruin senior pitcher Brian Derner, rising Westfield senior centerfielder Kevin Reardon and rising Yorktown senior second baseman Kyle Toulouse, a first-team All-Northern Region selection this past spring.
