Week 11 Top 10 Plays

Hon. Mention — Roland Roll Out

In the first quarter at Madison, Warhawk senior quarterback Eric Roland takes off on a designed roll out and dives for the pylon for an 11-yard touchdown run.

Hon. Mention — Angus Stakes Claim
In the first quarter at Madison, Eagle senior running back Angus Harper takes a weakside handoff, bounces against the flow of play and gets the corner for a 3-yard score that covered 30 yards.

Hon. Mention — Braden from Carson, Daily
Chantilly senior receiver Braden Voorhies skies for a 26-yard, juggling reception from quarterback Carson Romine over a Robinson defender, sparking the Chargers’ only scoring drive in their 10-7 loss to the Rams.

Hon. Mention — Sesay Pickle
Hayfield junior Hashim Sesay pulls down an athletic interception late in the first half at Yorktown. With the Patriots’ receiver suddenly acting as a defender, Sesay fends him off and pins the ball to his facemask for the pick and touchback.

No. 10 — End Zone Beckons Bechert
Early in the fourth quarter against Lake Braddock, Fairfax senior quarterback Jack Bechert dances around the pocket, eludes pressure and helicopters into the end zone between two defenders for an athletic, 3rd-and-goal touchdown run.

No. 9Sesay Hit Stick
Yorktown was driving in the first quarter, but faced a 3rd-and-9 at Hayfield’s 12-yard line. The Patriots appeared to have a touchdown, but Hawk junior Hashim Sesay had other plans as the ball reached the receiver. Sesay lowered his shoulder, cracked the Yorktown intended receiver and forced an incompletion, preserving Hayfield’s lead. The Patriots’ ensuing field goal attempt was blocked.

No. 8– Impressive INTs
The Lowe Down

In the third quarter of a two-score game against Lake Braddock, Fairfax senior defensive end Richard Lowe swats a pass attempt straight into the air, pivots and plucks the ball in one fluid motion for an interception and a 17-yard return. The Rebels’ upset bid fell short, though, 19-14.

How Sweet it Is

Westfield senior Ryan Sweet blows up South County’s attempt at a bubble screen, shoving the blocker into the intended receiver. Beyond that, the pass deflects off the blocker’s back and Sweet had the presence of mind to secure an interception.

No. 7Cougars Flick Fleas
With minutes remaining it his season, Oakton coach Joe Thompson reached deep into the bag of tricks. Cougar junior quarterback Jimmy Boone, junior running back Luke Willis and senior Matt Chandler pulled off a perfect flea-flicker, as Boone hit Willis for a 46-yard score.

No. 6 — Bulldog Bite
Westfield sophomore running back Kendall Anderson bounces off-tackle weakside and flattens a South County defensive back at the goal line. This 18-yard touchdown sparked Anderson to a four-carry, 54-yard night.

No. 5Cougar Case of the Mondays
Woodson junior Tyler Monday fields this Oakton punt on the hop and heads toward the home sideline. In turning the corner, Monday gets leveling blocks from seniors Charles Basil, Patrick Bulger and Betrand Ngampa, springing a 36-yard return. (**Second most watched clip of the week!!)

No. 4– QB Theft
Picks Pence, None the Richer

Madison senior defensive tackle Charlie Pence pops the ball from the hand of the Edison quarterback and senior defensive end Kevin Sampson grabs it out of the air, earning the Warhawks possession at the Eagles’ 5-yard line. Madison avenged its last two playoff eliminations, defeating postseason-rival Edison, 31-10.

Greeting Card’illo

Yorktown senior linebacker Erik Cardillo gets to Hayfield’s quarterback on a blitz and plucks the ball from his hand — mid-release — resulting in a recorded sack, fumble forced and fumble recovery.

No. 3Marshall Law Nazrul’es Pats
Yorktown marched 54 yards on the opening drive of its quarterfinal against Hayfield, but had to settle for a would-be 20-yard field goal. Hawk junior linebacker Justin Marshall had other plans, though, blocking the kick, allowing senior Nazrul Islam to scoop the loose ball and head 84 yards for the first of five first-half Hayfield touchdowns. The Hawks won their first playoff game in 16 years, 34-6. (**Most watched clip of the week!!)

No. 2Stoked
As time expired for halftime, Woodson senior Connor Reilly dumped a pass over the middle to sophomore tailback Jonathan Stokes. Stokes bounced off two defenders, got the corner and headed to the end zone for a 22-yard, buzzer-beating score. The touchdown doubled the Cavs’ lead, allowing them to coast to a 31-16, first-round win.

No. 1Me, Myself and Iyebote
As time expired for halftime, South County senior quarterback Aaron Andrews launched an end-zone-bound pass to junior receiver Oniyemi Iyebote with Westfield defensive backs looming. Iyebote pulled down the 28-yard touchdown pass to cap a 50-point first half. It also proved the game-winning score as South County beat Westfield, 27-23, for the only road win of the quarterfinal round.

Football: Hayfield 34, Yorktown 6

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**Highlights and post-game interviews are posted!**

Hayfield interim head coach Roy Hill is a legend in wrestling circles, winning nine district titles in the last 13 years with the school’s wrestling team, the MatHawks.

If Hayfield repeats its performance against Yorktown in the regional quarterfinals Friday, Hill’s football team might become the BallHawks.

The Hawks intercepted the Patriots four times, recovered two fumbles and blocked two field goals. Senior Nazrul Islam returning one 84 yards for the game’s first score.

Hayfield beat Yorktown, 34-6, advancing to the Division 5 Northern Region semifinals.

“It was crazy. Justin Marshall blocked it … when he blocked it, I didn’t know what to do at first because I thought it was an extra point,” said Islam, who also recovered a fumble on a Patriot kickoff return. “But, then, the whistle didn’t blow, so I just ran for a touchdown.

“We were up 6-0 and had the entirety of the momentum from there.”

Hayfield’s encore to Islam’s long return was a fumble recovery by junior Ryan Murphy, followed by a blocked field goal by Hawk sophomore Steve Lynch and Islam’s fumble recovery, forced by junior Hashim Sesay.

All that came before the end of the first quarter.

The region’s highest-scoring offense immediately capitalized. The Hawks led, 20-0, after one.

Hayfield senior Rayshawn Rigans carried 10 times for 205 yards and three scores without registering an attempt in the second half.

With that breathing room, the defense did not relent.

Sesay intercepted two passes in the second quarter, both in the red zone, and broke up a 3rd-and-9 pass attempt in the end zone with jaw-rattling hit.

Lynch’s blocked field came on the next play. Within two minutes, the Hawks tripled their lead.

“I thought it was a touchdown at first because Anton [McCallum], it looked like the guy got past him a little bit,” said Sesay, whose team was 2 minutes, 48 seconds from a shutout. “But I just hit him and the ball popped out.

“I got lucky I guess.”

Hayfield will play the winner of Saturday’s game between Lee and McLean, contested on the same field as the Hawks’ win Friday.

Football: Yorktown at Hayfield Playoff Preview

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**CLICK HERE to see previews for other games from around the Northern Region!!**

No. 6 Yorktown (6-4) vs. No. 3 Hayfield (8-2) at Lee on Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Offensive Rank (ppg): Yorktown – 8th (24.4); Hayfield – 1st (35.7)
Defensive Rank (ppg): Yorktown – T3rd (17.7); Hayfield – 6th (18.9)
Series Since 1998: Hayfield leads, 1-0
Last meeting: 2009 — Week 4 — Hayfield won, 27-19

Hayfield has been an historic scoring pace throughout the regular season, ripping up its record book from the last two decades.

Its second-lowest point total of the year, though, came in its 27-19 win at Yorktown in Week 4.

The Patriots’ interior line, led by seniors Nick Vaughan and Anibal Suazo, slowed the between-the-tackles portion of the Hawks’ triple option. But Yorktown was exposed in space.

Hayfield senior Rayshawn Rigans carried 15 times for 148 yards and two scores, his fourth-straight game with multiple touchdowns, including one of the dirtiest runs of the year.

Yorktown, though, moved the ball better against Hayfield than any other district opponent — sans Edison’s 13-minute surge in Week 10.

Patriot senior Sam Nottingham made his first start after missing the opening three games with an illness. He captained all three scoring drives, while splitting time under center with sophomore Jordan Smith.

With 5 minutes, 35 seconds left in regulation, this was a one-point game.

Turnovers will be key again; Yorktown threw three interceptions, two in its own half of the field. Hayfield converted the two plus-territory turnovers into 14 points.

While Rigans is always worth the price of admission, the best individual match-up will be the National District Offensive Player of the Year, Hayfield senior Anton McCallum, against the National District Defensive Player of the Year, Yorktown senior C.J. Bartholomew.

If the Patriots can complete more than 50-percent of their passes, something that has not happened since their Week 5 win over the Jaguars, they will keep pace with the Hawk offense.

No Northern Region team — Division 5 or 6 — has scored more than Hayfield this year.

Yorktown needs to keep it in the 20s. The interior line needs a repeat of its Week 4 performance and the Patriots have to make open-field tackles on McCallum and Rigans.

The latter is the bigger issue. It’s also the crux of the upset.

Hon. Mention — Price Gets Right
South Lakes junior Sean Price skies for a 16-yard, sideline grab even with defensive pass interference at Stone Bridge Friday.

Hon. Mention — Flair Jordan

Yorktown sophomore Jordan Smith reads this bubble screen by Washington-Lee to perfection, jumps the pass and returns it 20 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter Friday.

Hon. Mention — UnMask’ed

Oakton sophomore Tuck Masker catches junior quarterback Jimmy Boone in open space with a second-quarter pass, shakes a defender to the ground and goes 20 yards for a touchdown.

Hon. Mention — Rigans Weekly Appearance

Hayfield had a handful of highlight-reel touchdowns in its win at Edison Friday, including this 15-yard scamper by senior Rayshawn Rigans as part of 28 straight points by the Hawks.

No. 10 — Davis Wins for Winless
Wakefield junior Terry Davis goes 9 yards for the game-winning touchdown at Mount Vernon with 1:53 remaining, lifting the Warriors to their first win, 34-29.

No. 9Hold the Salimi
Creativity turned to disaster for Stuart on this screen pass as the receiver tossed it back to the quarterback, who was forced into the end zone. Falls Church senior Kyle Ruttkay applied the pressure, forcing a desperation heave that junior Ali Salimi intercepted at the 1-yard line for a bizarre touchdown.

No. 8McCallum Broken Play Improv
Twice, Hayfield senior Anton McCallum experienced miscommunication with his offensive backfield on red-zone triple options and twice he turned broken plays into touchdowns.

No. 7Highlanders Make Stand
In overtime of the Rotary Cup game, Langley elects to go for two points and the win after the should-be game-tying touchdown at McLean. The Highlanders, though, led by senior Riley Beiro and junior Thomas Overby, blow up the two-point try lifting McLean to the win and into the playoffs.

No. 6 — Greatest Hits
Hughes Lowers Shoulder
Falls Church senior Marcus Hughes lays out the Stuart running back in the Jaguars’ 42-20 win in the Bell Game.

Nubong Ding Dong
Lake Braddock senior defensive back Peres Nubong derails a West Springfield pass attempt, flattening the receiver in the first quarter of the Bruins’ 42-13 road win.

Ozycz’ Doty Deeds
Herndon senior quarterback Zack Ozycz is also the up-man on punt protect. He laid into the would-be punt-blocker in the second quarter of the Hornets’ 30-10 road loss to the Bulldogs Friday.

No. 5Rositano Blind TD Catch
With a South Lakes defensive back face-guarding, Stone Bridge junior Spenser Rositano somehow caught this 34-yard touchdown pass from junior Kyle Gouveia. The Bulldogs beat the Seahawks, 45-22, to lock up their fifth Liberty District title in as many seasons.

No. 4Harper Sideline-to-Sideline TD
Edison senior Angus Harper took this weakside pitch from the far sideline to the near, covering 61 yards and crossing the path of nearly every Hayfield defender. Still, the Eagles fell to the Hawks, 28-21, and into a three-way tie for second in the National District.

No. 3Sheriff of Nottingham
Yorktown seniors Sam Nottingham and C.J. Bartholomew linked up for an 11-yard touchdown with :09 seconds left before halftime, stretching the Patriots’ lead to 21-10 at the half. The Generals have not won in this series since 1982.

No. 2Kiffe Toe-Tap TD
Langley senior tight end Joey Kiffe pulled down this 12-yard touchdown pass from junior Braden Anderson, tapping both feet in-bounds, though he needed just one. Still, the Saxons fell to the Highlanders, 35-34, in overtime.

No. 1Riled Up
Robinson senior Connor Riley gained nearly one-fourth of his yards for the season at Centreville in Week 10. On just seven carries, Riley rolled up 305 yards and four touchdowns. His first two carries went for 179 yards and two scores, raising his yards per carry for the season from 5.97 to 7.05. He ran for scores of 94, 85, 50 and 55 yards Friday.

Football: Washington-Lee at Yorktown Preview

By Phil Murphy

Senior Multimedia/Content Manager, Washington D.C. Metro Area

**Click here for previews from games around the Northern Region in Week 10!!**

Washington-Lee (5-4, 4-2) at Yorktown (5-4, 4-2)
PowerPoint Ranking: Washington-Lee – 10th (Div. 5); Yorktown – 7th (Div. 5)
Offensive Rank (ppg in Division): Washington-Lee – 9th (18.4); Yorktown – 7th (24.0)
Defensive Rank (ppg in Division): Washington-Lee – T8th (23.7); Yorktown – 4th (18.6)
Last Week: Washington-Lee won at Wakefield, 28-6; Yorktown won at Mount Vernon, 21-3

Well, speaking of playoff implications, this is as close as it gets to a play-in game.

Whomever wins automatically qualifies for the Division 5 playoffs. It’s not a true play-in game, though, as the Patriots could still qualify with a loss.

For Yorktown to make it with a loss, it needs Stone Bridge to beat South Lakes or Langley to beat McLean and four of the following seven to happen: Briar Woods beats Dominion, Stuart beats Falls Church, Wilson (D.C.) beats Roosevelt, Madison beats Jefferson, Centreville beats Robinson, Herndon beats Westfield and Wakefield beats Mount Vernon.

On the field, Washington-Lee can run the ball, that’s obvious.

It would be well served on Friday to move the ball through the air like it did last week, especially in the red zone. General senior Karl Lendenmann caught three touchdowns passes as part of a five-grab, 80-yard night.

Yorktown, meanwhile, needs to summon whatever it had going in the final quarter against Wakefield and the opening quarter at Mount Vernon.

In those consecutive periods, the Patriots outscored opponents 48-0, forcing five turnovers and returning a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown. The polysyllabic combination of senior quarterback Sam Nottingham and receiver C.J. Bartholomew were integral to that outburst, accounting for four of those scores.

Outside of those two periods, though, Yorktown only held a three-point aggregate advantage over the two still-winless opponents.

Since Nottingham returned to the lineup full-time after an illness cost him the first three-plus weeks of the season, Yorktown is 4-1.

Thanks to my new b.f.f. Cheryl in the Patriot athletic office, we know the last time Washington-Lee beat Yorktown was 1982. The Patriots, led by coach Tony Ramasco, lost to the Generals, 25-13.

Yorktown had 23 players on its roster and finished 2-8, 0-6 in the Great Falls District.

Current Washington-Lee head coach Josh Shapiro was 12 years old.

I hope you appreciate that stat, it’s going to cost me a slice of pizza and a Coke at the next Patriots’ basketball game I cover.
