Girls’ Basketball: No. 6 Mount Vernon 63, Yorktown 45

By Angela Watts
Assistant GM, Washington D.C. Metro Area

** Click the links above to access a full photo gallery and video highlights from Wednesday’s game!

Mount Vernon paused its game against Yorktown for a brief moment in the third quarter Wednesday night to honor junior Tracey King after she scored her 1,000th career point on an offensive putback that she banked cleanly off the glass.

In the moment, King seemed more embarrassed than excited to be receiving the plaque — almost to the point of appearing uncomfortable.

What she was, instead, was focused.

That’s because her sights were set on much more than personal goals.

“I was excited,” said King, who was also given a game ball with her final tally of 1,008 points inscribed on it, moving her into sixth place on the Majors’ all-time scoring list. “I mean, it probably didn’t show on my face, but I was excited. I’ve been working hard since my freshman year.

“But it really doesn’t mean much to me until the season is over because I want our whole team to be successful and I want us to go far and show how good we really are.”

The Majors aren’t having any trouble with that. No. 6 Mount Vernon posted a convincing, 63-45 win over visiting Yorktown on Wednesday to mark its 15th consecutive victory. The Majors’ lone loss was a one-point defeat at South County on Dec. 2. Otherwise, their 15 wins have come by an average of 23.1 points per game.

“The girls are really buying into the concept that defense wins basketball games,” said first-year Coach Terry Henderson. “On any given night we always have someone step up offensively. And so as long as we have all five on the floor working on the defensive side of the ball — getting steals and turning those into easy baskets — then offensively there’s never any pressure on anyone. We don’t need one designated person to carry the team.”

King, who scored a team-high 17 points against the Patriots, often paces the Majors. But as on most nights, Mount Vernon (15-1 overall, 6-0 National District) had others reach double-figures scoring as well, including junior Jasmine McDonald (13) and senior Allison Mathes (12). Junior Jalinda Venable also added eight points despite playing just the second half.

Yorktown (9-6, 4-2) was led by sophomore forward Lena Negri’s game-high 19 points, while senior Shannon Briggs added eight.

“She just gets it done on both ends of the floor,” Henderson said of King. “She’s very unselfish and she just lets the game come to her. She’s real patient in the offense and she can score in multiple ways — she can drive to the basket, she can hit the outside shot — so it’s really tough to defend her.”

Even tougher to defend them all.

“Even watching in the off-season, I could see the determination of all the girls and I knew they wanted to get better,” Henderson said. “And that’s the key. They definitely want to get better every day … and that makes things very easy for me.”
