Girls’ Basketball: No. 2 Edison 70, No. 5 Yorktown 37

By Angela Watts
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story for video highlights from Tuesday’s game.)

The Edison girls’ basketball players were both poised and focused Tuesday night against visiting Yorktown. They hustled after loose balls, fought for rebounds and communicated well on the floor. They played pressure defense and pushed the tempo on offense, scoring time and time again on fast-break opportunities that were created off steals or blocked shots.

And that was just the beginning.

The Eagles were also having fun. They danced to the pre-game music, laughed on the court and occasionally even made eyes at their very vocal supporters in the stands.

What else are you supposed to do when you’re beating teams by 45.1 points per game?

That is the average margin-of-victory for No. 2 Edison over its National District opponents this season. And while No. 5 Yorktown entered Tueday’s game with an impressive record of its own, the Patriots (16-3, 8-2 National District) managed only a slightly better showing against the Eagles (17-1, 9-0) in what proved another sound Edison victory, 70-37 .

“I think we have a fabulous team,” said first-year Yorktown coach Kim Cordell. “We play with a lot of heart, a lot of discipline and we have a lot of weapons on our team who can shoot from the inside or outside. And our bench is really deep, too. We’re 16-3 now, and that’s not a shabby record at all.

“It’s just that Edison, well, Edison is a really good team. They definitely have a ton of talent.”

That was evidenced by the fact that the Eagles’ leading scorer, senior Chasity Clayon, had an off-night shooting. Clayton, an inside-outside threat who averages 18.2 points per game, scored only eight on Tuesday night.

And it didn’t matter a bit.

Equally versatile senior swingman Adria Crawford, who averages next-best 16 points a game, increased her total to 26 against the Patriots.

“Adria is our work horse,” Edison coach Dianne Lewis said. “I say it all the time: When she’s on, we’re on. She’s our engine. So tonight she had an excellent game and you could tell she was just having fun out there. And I think that’s the best situation for us to be in, when she’s playing like that.”

Edison sophomore guard Myisha Goodwin, who averages 12.1 points a game, also poured in 17 against Yorktown while feisty senior reserve forward Stella Holloway, who averages 6.4, scored 11 before fouling out with 2 minutes, 37 seconds remaining.

“We set team and individual goals and we just concentrate on achieving those all of the time,” Holloway said. “That’s what keeps us motivated. We have all these things we have to do, like crash the boards and never let up and hustle and cheer on our teammates, all kinds of things like that to keep each other up and to keep us focused.”

So, too, does the knowledge that the Northern Region tournament begins in just 20 days. That’s where the Eagles’ will look to avenge their only loss this season, a 58-48 stumble against top-ranked T.C. Williams on Dec. 14. And that’s why the Edison starters do not sit the entire fourth quarter of games even if that night’s outcome has already been decided. The Eagles, who boast seven seniors, have goals that stretch far beyond National District play.

“It’s tough and I take a lot of flack for it sometimes because people want to know whey I’ve still got [the starters] out on the court, but otherwise they won’t be conditioned and ready for the playoffs,” Lewis said. “We try to mix it up and give other people some opportunity as well, but they still have to get ready. They have to.

“We’ve got a lot of work still ahead of us to even begin to reach our goals.”

Swimming: Northern Region Championships

By Sam Dowell
Fairfax High School Senior

The Oak Marr Recreation Center was packed and the music was blaring Saturday evening as everyone got ready for the start of the 2008 Northern Region swimming championships. The field was as talented as ever and the rivalries just as competitive. It was a meet that saw eight new regional records set and one very unexpected ending.

The championsihps started out with a bang as Thomas Jefferson’s boys’ 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Wade Gong, Jonathan Christensen, Ben Tuben, and Matt Callahan set a new meet record with a time of 1 minute, 35.11 seconds in the first race of the night.

Matthew Bernacki represented the Chantilly Chargers well by breaking the 500-yard freestyle time previously held by Olympian Tom Dolan with a time of 4:30.43. The other individual boys’ record breaker was the junior Sean Fletcher from Madison who swam himself to record time of 49.30 in the 100-yard butterfly.

The night was capped off by Lake Braddock’s girls’ 400-yard relay team breaking another regional record with a time of 3:29.40. It was a fitting end for seniors Molly Emery and Ashley Danner, who were part of the relay team along with Sarah Lynch and Carly Ogren. For Danner and Emery, it was their third record-breaking finish of the day. Emery also set a new record in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races while Danner showed great versatility by setting records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

On the team side, Fairfax’s girls’ came into the Northern Region championships poised to make some noise after a second-place finish to Robinson in the Concorde District finals. The Rams, meanwhile, came in looking for more success and a victory at regionals.

As it turned out, both teams got what they wanted.

Going into the final race of the day — the 400-yard freestyle relay — Fairfax held a mere one-point lead over Robinson. The Rams overcame the pressure and swam to a second-place finish in the relay, followed by Fairfax in third. The finish gave Robinson 17 points to add to is total while Fairfax earned 16.

In a rare and unforeseen ending, Fairfax and Robinson became co-regional girls’ champions with 294 points a piece.

There was far less drama on the boys’ side, where five-time defending state champion Robinson won the regional title and sit poised to make a run at an unprecedented sixth consecutive state title.

Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball: Yorktown Sweeps Host Wakefield

By Phil Murphy
DigitalSports.com

(Look below the story to find video highlights. Late-game footage and interviews will be added Saturday afternoon.)

Yorktown Boys 63, Wakefield 62

Yorktown senior Wes Huntoon stepped to the free-throw line in a tie game against district rival Wakefield with only :33 seconds showing on the game clock. Forced to endure chants of “choke” from the Warrior supporters, Huntoon’s first of two attempts made it seem as if he’d submit to the wishes of the home crowd.

“I missed the first one and I know I’m a senior, so I have to step up,” he said. “I’m a captain on this team.”

Huntoon then coolly sank the second attempt to put the Patriots ahead by one. After two timeouts by Wakefield coach Tony Bentley, a desperation three-pointer fell short as time expired, and Yorktown escaped the hostile environment with a 63-62 victory.

“I knew I’d hit the second one,” said Huntoon, who finished with seven points.  “I’m a pretty good free throw shooter. I just shot it and it went in. I’m pretty happy.”

Yorktown (10-8, 7-2) had led throughout the first three quarters thanks in large part to the game-high 25 points by forward Simon Kilday. The junior connected on all three of his attempts from beyond the arc just three days after the Patriots shot 3-for-22 from three-point range as a team in an upset, home loss to Washington-Lee (1-16, 1-8). One of Kilday’s 3-pointers midway through the third quarter broadened the Patriots’ lead to 40-28.

“Wakefield is one of the tougher places to play in the region,” he said. “We just had to come out here, stay focused and not let that stuff distract us.”

But a Herculean effort by Warrior junior Reggie Williams, who scored 11 of his 14 points in the fourth period, coupled with 30 made free throws in 38 attempts by the team, sparked the Wakefield rally.

“I’m kind of carrying the load this year,” said Williams, whose team had to replace its three leading scorers from last year’s Northern Region runner-up — George Johnson, Anthony Allen and Tye Beal.

“I was just pushing the ball. I was in attack mode,” he said.

The Warriors (6-11, 3-5) were able to tie the game three times in the fourth quarter before briefly taking the lead on a baby hook by center Alex Henderson with 2:01 to go. Henderson scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half.

“We allowed too much dribble penetration,” said Kilday, Yorktown’s leading scorer on the season. “We let guys get to the baseline. They were able to get to the free throw line and slowly chip away at the lead. But in the end, we came up with the stops when we needed them, we hit the shots when we needed them and we were able to pick up a win.”

Yorktown Girls 59, Wakefield 44

In the first game of Friday’s doubleheader, the No. 6 Yorktown girls defeated Wakefield, 59-44. The Patriots were led by 5-feet, 10-inch junior guard Shannon Briggs, who scored 15 of her game-high 18 points in the first half.

“We thought it would be a competitive game,” said Briggs, lining up in her first game as a post player. “We didn’t have our starting line-up, exactly. There were injuries. But we expected it to be a really good, competitive game. We expected a win.”

Briggs played most of the contest in the front court, filling in for senior captain Billie Ripy, who missed the game due to injury. The Patriots (16-1) play at No. 2 Edison on Tuesday and expect to have a full roster, including Ripy and junior LaNia Charity.

Charity returned to the lineup for the first time tonight since going down in the second quarter of Yorktown’s Jan. 11 home loss, 79-52, to the Eagles.

Edison (16-1), featuring Division I signees Adria Crawford and Chasity Clayton, has not lost a district game since the current seniors were in seventh grade.
