Edison continued its perfect season by shutting out two-time defending National District champion Yorktown, 4-0, in the Patriots’ house.

“That was one of the top games of the season so far,” Eagle junior Mark Krisak said. “Now, we have to look on to beat the rest of the teams in our district.”

Added junior Will Bauer: “Edison has been very, very overdue for a streak like this. We’ve been on the bad end of the stick for a very long time. It feels great to be on top.”

Both teams were fighting for tempo early, and it seemed like Yorktown was beginning to get the upper hand. Senior Alex Herrera, the Patriots’ premier center midfielder and reigning Northern Region Player of the Year, cracked a shot that was destined for the back of the net, but junior Brian Mickey came up with a big save.

Minutes later, Krisak entered the game and give Edison the lift it needed with his aggressive and relentless play, which led to a red card for Herrera.

“I came in on a corner kick and right after the corner kick, the ball was getting cleared out,” Krisak said. “[Herrera], their best player, I tackled the ball from him. He got kind of mad at the ref … and got himself out of the game.

“That was definitely the defining moment of the game.”

His teammates responded just a few minutes later and would not loaf on the advantage presented to them. Eagle senior Mauricio Salgado scored on a wild volley from a corner kick in the 25th minute.

Eric [Perez] crossed it in from a corner,” he said. “I nearly headed it in, but I missed it. When I turned around to look at the ball, it was all by itself, so I just kicked it up from where I was from.”

As has been the case all season, Edison showed no let-up.

In the 32nd minute, Billy Arnez received a cross after breaking through the Patriot defense, and nailed it past the keeper from a tough angle.

“It was a free kick from about the corner of the 18 and then they crossed it in,” said Arnez, one of several strikers that have made the Eagles the second-highest scoring team in the Region. “The defense took it out and one of our players just crossed it back in. I was there by myself and I just took my time, looked at the ball, and took a shot at it.”

The defense did its job, too. With a two-goal lead, it could have easily relaxed and allowed a comeback, but the Eagle backs kept the intensity up the whole game, stepping up every time the Patriots threatened.

“Coach has been pushing the defense to step up,” said junior captain Andy Rasdorf, whose team has outscored its opponents 21-4 this year. “He says that we will be scoring goals during the games, but it’s up to the defense in order to see how many goals they can stop.

“If they stop as many goals as we put in, we win the game.”

The second half was the Andy Najar Rodriguez show. The sophomore Human Highlight Reel added two more goals to his already impressive resume. Both of Rodriguez’s goals make the displayed a great level of trick and skill that he used to beat defenders.

With the win, Edison (6-0-0) will put its undefeated season on the line again on Monday against out-of-region foe Woodbridge.

“We need to keep our focus,” sophomore Hunter Gill said. “We need to remember that we are still only half way into the season. We need to get ready for districts.”
